What You Need to Know Before Editing an IELTS Essay

  • Please read the attached documents Grading Guidelines. For now, concentrate on the IELTS Writing Band Descriptor: Task 2 in the Guidelines. We would like to focus on this, since we are only helping students with Task 2 writing.
  • Read the examiners’ comments and sample essays located in the Examples to gain a better understanding of how to grade the essays and how to improve them to the levels expected.
  • This is not a typical editing job, because it is another way of teaching. Please explain the mistakes by showing them how to reach their target score.
  • This is a one-time editing, meaning you will get one chance to edit the document. Students will learn from your edited essay as a sample essay to learn. So please give them a complete report on making their target by the requested deadline.
  • If you’re unable to make the deadline, notify the student with an alternative in a timely manner so arrangements can be made.
  • There will be other kinds of editing by fixing a student’s draft for some times, 3 times, for instance, but not for this editing test.
  • Please remember that essay must be between 250 and 280 words. The ability to be concise is highly valued.
  • To help them understand how they can reach the student’s target score, according to IELTS Task 2 Band Descriptors in the Guidelines, please correct phrases, and grammatical rules or reorganize their ideas and even adjust the paragraphs if needed.
  • First, grade the student’s essay. This will mean that you will need to be familiar with the essay grading criteria.
  • Do not try to fix everything for students. Instead, point out their minor and major mistakes which prevent them from getting the target score they expected.
  • Just like the previous point, do not just fix the spelling or grammar. Stay focused on the student’s targets of achievement.
  • Fix those mistakes by explaining related rules, giving sample sentences or rewriting some sentences to give them a clear sample to learn so that they can avoid making the same mistakes.
  • Give them clear and specific advice by leaving understandable comments and some sample sentences, thesis statements or some passages. There may even be cases where you may have to rewrite the essays to show the students how the essay should have been written.
  • Be careful with the spelling of words. Some Chinese students write words spelled in British English, which are correct for the testing.
  • In the real tests, students write their essays using a pencil. There are samples in the Examples document.
  • You can edit the essay in the way you think is best, so be creative. This is the fun part of writing, and your students will pick up on your enthusiasm.
  • Please re-save the edited essay with your first and last name on it.
  • After returning the edited documents and its notes for the student to contact@saplingacademy.com, we will arrange an interview with you to discuss points which will be more efficient for both you and the students.
